Web-application services for plotting paleomagnetic data (experimentally release)
Usage and Notes
Demagnetization Curve (Zijderveld diagram; As & Zijderveld, 1958) and Fitting (Regression; Kirshvink, 1980): MagePlot/P
- Coordinate Conversion: changing plotting coordinate from sample coordinate to in-situ before plot (experimental)
- None: No coorinate change
- Dip Direction / Dip : Calculate paleodirection with giving Dip Direction (direction of the slope downward) and Dip (angle of the slope, zero when horizontal) of the sample
- Strike / Dip : Calculate paleodirection with giving Strike (direction of the horizontal line on the top) and Dip (angle of the slope, zero when horizontal) of the sample
- Sample coordinate: Input angles of "Dip Direction / Strike / Azimth" and "Dip / Plunge"
- Regression: Fitting by principle component analysis (Kirshvink, 1980)
When you select "Assignment of range", input the range of demagnetization in "from" and "to" boxes.
"Automatic" option is experimental.
- Data:
- Title (e.g. sample name) must be in the first line. Special characters are not displayed in results.
- Data lines start from the second line.
- "Demag Level" "Declination" "Inclination" "Intensity", in every line. (No unit)
- In each line, the values should be separated by spaces or tabs (delimiter)
- You can copy & paste data from Microsoft Excel and other tables.
- Do not put a vacant line at the end of file.
- Example of Data (Try copy & paste it)
Directions on Equal Area Projection: MagePlot/D
- Drawing Area: Whole range (hemisphere) or restricted region (Longitude: -30 ˜ +30 °, Latitude: +30 ˜ +70 °)
- Mean and α95: Plotting mean direction (Fisher) and 95% confidence limit circle
- Error circles for data: Drawing error cone (σ, α95) for each datum. The fourth column in data is necessary.
- Secular variation curve: Drawing SV curve during the past 2000 years, for archaeomagnetism in Japan. When you select "Hirooka's", input the longitude and latitude of the sampling site.
- VGP: Drawing virgual geomagnetic poles. If you select "northern" or "southern", input the longitude and latitude of the sampling site.
- Data :
- Title (e.g. site name) must be in the first line. Special characters are not displayed in results.
- "Sample Name" "Mean Declination" "Mean Inclination" "Erorr (σ or α95, optional)", in every line. (No unit)
- In each line, the values should be separated by spaces or tabs (delimiter)
- Do not use space and tab in "Sample Name"
- You can copy & paste data from Microsoft Excel and other tables.
- Do not put a vacant line at the end of file.

For Results of Magnetic Suspension Balance (Curie Balance): MagePlot/MB
- To plot the results of Curie Balance (NMB-89) by Natsuhara Giken.
- Options
- Gas Condition: Air / Vacuum/ Argon
- Normalization: Yes- normalized by the first data and the minimum data (Offset calibration is not done.)
- Paste .mbf data file as is. (Header is also used.)
- This program does not work for repeated measurements. Boundary of heating and cooling is defined by the point in which the temperature turns to decreasing af first above 400 C.

Magnetic Hysteresis Loop: MagePlot/H
- To plot the results (Hysteresis Loop) of AGM/VSM "MicroMag 2900/3900" by Lake Shore (was PMC).
- Option
- Draw Derivatives: None / 1st / 1st and 2nd
- Paste the output file of MicroMag as is. (Header is also used.)
- You can input both data file with or without slope corrected. If input corrected data, uncorrected and corrected curves will be shown.
- Example of Data (Try copy & paste it)
Notes
- No warranty of any problem. (not sure "bug free")
- If you find a bug or you have a request, please informe me by email. (hatake at center.ous.ac.jp)
- You may use this services for your publication with no credit for now. (or cretid this page)
In the future...
MagePlot/P
- Option for anchoring at origin
- Better automatic regression
MagePlot/D
- Bedding correction
- Drawing VGP wandaring curve and displaying poles in both hemispheres (for reversals and transitions)
